Urges Senate to Eliminate Burdensome Taxes for Iowa's Seniors
DES MOINES, IA - Today, Congressman Jim Nussle issued the following statement praising the bipartisan passage of comprehensive tax relief for Iowa's seniors. Under the measure, the state's tax on pensions and Social Security income would be phased out over five years beginning in 2007. Nussle called for the end of these burdensome taxes as part of the tax reform agenda he unveiled at the Iowans for Tax Relief State Conference in October.
Congressman Jim Nussle said, "I praise the leadership of the House to eliminate the Social Security and pension taxes for Iowa's seniors. These taxes burden our seniors - hurting those at the low-end of the income scale who are attempting to live on fixed incomes and chasing away many middle and higher income seniors to invest in more affordable, neighboring states.
"I urge the Senate to pass this necessary tax relief so that Iowa's seniors are not forced to leave their home, taking with them their ability to invest in our businesses, contribute in our communities and mentor our young entrepreneurs. Iowa should not have a tax code that fundamentally discourages our most valued citizens from enjoying and experiencing their retirement in our great state," concluded Nussle.
